The province of KwaZulu-Natal is reeling following a massive pile up on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg that claimed more than a dozen lives.
Transport authorities confirmed on Saturday that at least 15 people had died when truck lost control on the major route in the early hours of the morning.
The truck is then believed to have collided with several other vehicles on the road before coming to a standstill.
KZN Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says a taxi is among the affected vehicles.
While the exact details are still being investigated, the taxi is believed to have been travelling from Johannesburg to Harding, south of Durban.
"All the 15 fatalities are believed to have been from a minibus taxi."
One person, a 7-year-old boy, survived.
"At this stage it is still difficult to verify some of the details," Ncalane adds.
The route remains close as emergency teams and law enforcement work to clear the scene.Fire engulfs taxi and passengers in horror crash into truck on N3, Pietermaritzburg https://t.co/JQQWslAjy0 #ArriveAlive @Netcare911_sa pic.twitter.com/q1ezFZBdan
