Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says the suspect was traced to the student residency during a wide spread investigation by the Sunnyside Trio Task Team.

"Witnesses came forward and Police also viewed CCTV footage from buildings in the vicinity."

Peters says at this stage, she cannot comment on whether the suspect is indeed a student.

"I can also not at this stage disclose the name of the institution where the suspect was located. All of that will come out in court."

The suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday.

As far as the attack itself, Peters has confirmed the officers were definitely not shot.

"There was a weapon used, but that can only be confirmed for sure once the results of the medical tests have been released."

A 41-year old male constable also injured, is recovering well in hospital.

The two officers were attacked while conducting a routine stop-and-search roadblock on the corner of Leyds and Esselen streets late on Friday night.
