24 arrested in Mashaba's raid
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Twenty four people have been arrested for, among others, illegally reconnecting electricity to city services, after they were disconnected by the City of Jo'burg for failure to pay their municipal accounts.
The arrests come after a raid led by mayor Herman Mashaba.
Mashaba's spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says six of those arrested for illegally reconnecting, owe the city just over R3.3 million.
18 foreign nationals were also arrested during Monday's raid after they were suspected to be undocumented persons.
The group will be detained and processed by the Department of Home Affairs.

Mashaba's office, along with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and various other departments, conducted the raid on Monday, in an attempt to recuperate money owed by businesses to the city.
It is estimated that over 2000 businesses within the city centre owe nearly R1 billion in electricity debt.
