This is an increase of around 150% compared to previous months.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the organisation usually records around 10 arrests a month.

"The 25 were arrested for various crimes including cable theft, vandalism and illegal connections. These are the crimes that City Power battles with annually costing the City of Johannesburg millions in revenue.”

Mangena says the majority of the suspects were found in possession of aluminium and copper cables.

He adds that City Power is bracing itself for an increase in vandalism and cable theft when recyclers and sharp metal dealers open their doors again next month.

"We will be initiating and executing joint operations on scrap metal dealers across the city in conjunction with other security clusters to deal with theft and vandalism.”
