27 Gauteng matrics impacted by taxi disruptions

Members of the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) took to the streets in Tshwane on Wednesday, bemoaning government’s snail-pace in the allocation of the Covid-19 relief funds.  

The taxi association handed over a memorandum of grievances to the Department of Transport, before heading down to the Union Buildings to hand over another memorandum to the Office of the Presidency. 

The march turned disruptive, with several major routes blockaded.  

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says 27 matric pupils were affected by the disruptions. 

“The Gauteng Education Department wish to confirm that, today, 18 November 2020, out of 66 313 candidates that were scheduled to write Business Studies, we have recorded twenty 27 candidates who were affected by the taxi strike.” 

Mabona says pupils in Tshwane West were hardest hit. 

“Tshwane West is the Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa – that’s where we were hugely impacted by the strike,” Mabona adds. 

“Two candidates were accommodated in Mpumalanga Province, that’s where they wrote their examination.” 

Mabona assures parents arrangements were made with schools. 

“Accordingly, as per the granted concession, we said schools must allow candidates who arrived an hour late, after the commencement of the examination to write. In addition, those that opted to go to other exam centres were also permitted to write.” 

The taxi association threated further disruptions if their demands were not met by transport officials.
