As many as 440 motorists were arrested for alleged drunk driving in Johannesburg at the weekend, metro police said on Monday.

Spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the drivers were nabbed during policing operations across the city.

“Motorists are reminded to obey the rules of the road and take things easy this festive season as driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and other offenses will not be tolerated. We are paying attention to the N1, M1, M2 and the N3 highways as they tend to be very busy due to many people leaving Gauteng province for holidays,” Minnaar said.

The alleged drunk drivers would appear in various courts in the city on Monday.

Meanwhile, 41 drivers were arrested for speeding in the same period. The fastest speedster was a 33-year-old driver who clocked 212km per hour in a BMW M5 along the N3, Minnaar said.

“When asked by officers why he placed himself and other road users in danger by driving at such a high speed, he told them the BMW engine was too powerful,” recalled Minnaar.

Minnaar added that driving at high speed and overtaking when it was dangerous to do so, were the main cause of head-on collisions
