The taxi was stopped in the Nelson Mandela Bay CBD on Tuesday morning.

Apart from the school children, a female was also sitting in the passenger seat alongside the taxi driver.

Nelson Mandela Bay spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki says the taxi driver has been arrested on charges of overloading a vehicle and reckless driving.

"The Metro Police officers are used to overloading, but this one was shocking."

Mniki says the taxi was transporting the young children to various schools.

He has called on parents not to allow their children onto any means of transport, if they see the vehicle is overloaded.

"Some are not aware, but some are aware and we are pleading with them not to regret for the rest of our their lives what might happen to their kids," adds Mniki.

Nelson Mandela Bay authorities say they are focusing on the dangers posed by overloading of vehicles.
