It’s understood the suspects were involved in an armed robbery when they opened fire on the guards.

The identities of the trio have not been confirmed.

A fourth security guard was injured and taken to hospital.

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says law enforcement were tipped off and a second shooting ensued.

“Police on Tuesday afternoon responded to a complaint of a shooting in progress between police and armed suspects believed to be behind the earlier fatal shooting of the three security officers in Kempton Park.

“The joint team of SAPS and EMPD members attending to the complaint pursued the suspects' VW Polo from Kempton Park up to Kanna Street in Benoni. The suspects were eventually cornered in Beach Street, Northmead Extension 4 following an exchange of gunfire with the police.”

Two suspects were also shot dead.

A third suspect was wounded and taken to hospital where he is under police guard.

“During the arrest, police recovered two AK-47 rifles from the suspects' vehicle,” Makhubele adds.

“The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined.”
