"Our preliminary statistics show that there have been more than 500 motorists arrested throughout the country for various offenses but the majority of the offences included drunken driven, speeding, driving of unworthy vehicles," said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Zwane confirmed among the arrests is a motorist caught driving at more than 190 km/h along the N14.

Law enforcement operations would remain in place until all travellers have reached their respective destinations.

"We are getting ready because you know today there are some people who had gone out on pilgrimages, they are starting to make their journeys back home so we will be on the road to make sure that those vehicles are road worthy and they are not overloaded but we expect that traffic will peak tomorrow with the majority of people making their way to industrial areas,” Zwane said.

"We'd like to advise motorists to plan their driving trips very well and ensure that they take regular rests along the way. It's overcast in some parts of the country and we want to urge motorists to keep those headlights on throughout the trip so that they can be visible."

The South African Weather Services has also warned of heavy rains in Gauteng. Mpumalanga and North West can also expect scattered thundershowers.
