North West police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says 11 people were allegedly killed and properties burnt between Sunday and Monday at the Sondela informal settlement.

The motive for the killings is still unknown but Mokgwabone says police are aware of tensions between the Basotho people and amaXhosa residing in the area.

“The first incident, two cases of murder were registered after two men were found dead on Sunday. It is apparent that tyres were used to set alight the victims."

Mokgwabone says investigations revealed that the victims were from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.

He adds two more cases of murder were opened after bodies of males were also found at various locations within the Sondela.

Mokgwabone says one of them was allegedly stabbed to death.

“On Saturday two men who are reported to be Lesotho nationals were allegedly stabbed to death.”

On Monday five more bodies were found in the informal settlement, says Mokgwabone.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The six are facing a litany of charges, including murder, kidnapping and arson.
