The first student self-quarantined after coming into contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19 but by then he had attended several classes - compromising at least 350 other students.

The university's spokesperson Shiron Patel says the student is recovering well but remains isolated.

"The student isn't presenting with any further symptoms," says Patel.

"The NICD has worked through those 350 students who may have been affected. They eliminated about 320 of those students and said they are not at high risk of having contracted the Covid-19."

Of the remaining students, 5 of them also remain under observation at their residence rooms.

"So the NICD has cleared the majority of the group of 350," she adds.

Table Mountain 'hot spot' for potential coronavirus outbreak, closes doors

A leading tourist destination, Table Mountain sees a litany of international travelers every year - posing a major health threat for the continued spread of the deadly virus. More than 200 000 cases have been confirmed and a staggering death toll of at least 8 200 people.

After the university's first case, management rushed to contain the virus - suspending its academic programme and closing down its campuses.

Students were given 72 hours to vacate residences.

Two of its students have subsequently taken the institution to court over their decision.

Lerato Moela and Matsobane Shaun Matlhwana filed an urgent application in which they want the court to interdict the evacuation of students from residences.

The university opposed the application on Wednesday at the High Court in Johannesburg.

"The judgment has been reserved until tomorrow," says Patel.
