62 arrested for Van Reenen Pass blockade

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested 62 truck drivers in connection with the blockade on the N3.

Truck drivers embarked on a two-day protest action on the Van Reenen's Pass in KwaZulu-Natal.
All lanes were cleared on Thursday morning after law enforcement agencies removed the stranded trucks in what it described as a “monumental task" .
According to provincial police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele, the suspects were believed to be protesting about wages and the employment of foreign nationals.

They are expected to appear in court soon.
“They are still in the process of removing the trucks, but both lanes on the N3, north and south, are open. Sixty-two suspects have been arrested for public violence as well as obstructing the traffic flow and will be appearing in court soon.”
According to the N3 Toll Concessions, Con Roux, law enforcement agencies worked throughout the night to clear the congestion.
The task of moving the trucks were made more difficult as some drivers threw away the keys.
