70 parties to contest May elections

Seventy political parties and 11 independent candidates will be contesting in the national and provincial elections on 29 May.
Thirty-one of those will be contesting in the national elections for the first time.
The Independent Electoral Commission’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, gave an update on preparations for the upcoming elections on Tuesday.
"On April 12, the commission issued certificates to 14 892 candidates who will contest 887 seats in the forthcoming elections. Fifteen political are contesting all tiers in the elections, which means the proportional representations seats in the National Assembly, the nine provinces as well as the nine provincial legislatures."
He said that with the candidates and political parties now finalised, the IEC is going ahead with printing the ballot papers.
"The 27.79 million will receive three ballots to elect candidates to represent them in the national assembly and provincial legislatures. The use of the three ballots follows the amendments to the electoral act, which was signed into law in April 2023."
