A spokesperson for the long-running soapie 7de Laan says the SABC has no plans to recommission the show.

This comes as loyal fans of the show are set to protest outside the SABC on Thursday as part of efforts to convince the public broadcaster to keep the show on air.

In July, the public broadcaster released a statement about the decommissioning of the show due to what it described as financial constraints.

The SABC 2 show, which has been running for 23 years, will not be recommissioned for another season when season 24 comes to an end in December.

A petition is expected to be handed to SABC executives demanding that the public broadcaster keep the show on the air.

7de Laan spokesperson Kayleen Bessit said the SABC had not given any indication that it would revise its decision.

“The 7de Laan fans' intent to protest signifies the impact the show has had on the country as a whole. As the country and the crew, we are deeply moved by their determination to reverse the SABC’s decision, and as always, we are grateful for their unwavering support and fandom over the years. We believe we’ve built quite a significant fanbase, and this is just a testament to the impact the show has had on households across South Africa.

“So, the reason for 7de Laan being removed from the air is exactly what the SABC has been fighting publicly. Their ongoing financial troubles have made it difficult to sustain the show.

“The SABC has not given any indication of their intention to revise their decision or also the possibility of any future plans of the show. As it stands, 7de Laan is not being recommissioned, and that decision is final.”

The show will join the much-loved SABC 3 soapie Isidingo in the dustbin after it was canned in 2020.
