Nine Grey College teachers in Bloemfontein have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Free State Education Spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, says the teachers – two from the high school and five from the boys’ primary school – are now quarantining at home.

Ndaba says a decision was made not to halt classes and close down the school following advice from the Free State Health Department.

Learning and teaching activities are continuing at Grey.

Ndaba further reveals that other schools like the revered Bloemfontein boys' school are reporting instances of positive Covid-19 cases, but the situation remains one or two cases here and there currently.

“Our plea to all stakeholders – learners, teachers, and non-teaching staff at the school/individuals who end up at the school – is to religiously observe the stipulated Covid-19 protocols. Wear masks, sanitize and observe social distancing where possible”. He says many of the cases at schools currently are coming from outside school premises, further cautioning that we all need to be extra vigilant as a result," says Ndaba.

This as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) recently declared that the Free State is undergoing a third wave of Covid-19 infections with cases rising daily.

According to the latest NICD figures, the Free State has the fourth highest active case number in the country, standing at 5 041.

This is behind Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape.
