95 arrested for GBV in Gauteng

Gauteng police have arrested 95 people in connection with gender-based violence amid the countrywide lockdown.
The arrests were made during an anti-crime operation on Thursday.

Police Minister Bheki Cele earlier confirmed that police received at least 87 000 calls linked to gender-based violence over the past week.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says a total 572 people were arrested for various crimes.
“Amongst the arrested suspects, 95 were wanted for gender based violence and one wanted for crimes against children as well as crimes such as murder, malicious damage to property, assault and domestic violence.”
A total of 188 individuals were arrested in Tshwane and 110 in Johannesburg.
“All arrested suspects are expected to appear before the respective courts in the province on Monday,” says Makhubela.
