AA: Fuel price hikes could be ‘worse than predicted’

“We’re going to see a huge increase going into the new month,” warns the Automobile Association (AA).

The AA has painted a grim picture for fuel prices in July.


Spokesperson Layton Beard has warned motorists to prepare for the worst.


“At this stage the AA is forecasting that petrol will be increasing by around R1.73, diesel by R1.74 and illuminating paraffin by a massive R2.14 when fuel prices are adjusted next week.


“The main driver behind this international crude oil prices have continued to increase thereby setting the stage for extraordinary fuel price hikes."

Challenge to tobacco ban to be heard in August

The parties are challenging the continued ban of the sale of tobacco products under level 3 of the lockdown. The case was meant to be heard in the Western Cape High Court on 30 June. The CEO of Saai Francois Rossouw says all applicants are disappointed at the latest development.

Beard says their latest estimate is higher than expected.


“The rand has also not played its role. It’s weakened against the dollar,” Beard adds.


The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is expected to announce the adjustment on Friday or the weekend, with the adjusted to fuel prices to come into effect on Wednesday.
