‘Absolute nonsense’ that Walus showed no remorse, claims lawyer

The legal representative of Chris Hani’s killer Janusz Walus has refuted claims that his client failed to show any remorse for his actions.

Julian Knight remarks come a day after the Constitutional Court ordered Walus’ release on parole.

Walus was charged and sentence for the assassination of SACP leader Hani outside his Boksburg home in 1993.

He will be released on parole after spending 29 years behind bars at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.

Knight says there can be no doubt that his client has repented for his crime.

"The claim that he displayed no remorse is absolute nonsense. It's well documented within his file with regards to what he has done, and it is embodied in the psychology reports.

"We have a constitutional democracy, which recognises equality before the law, and that everyone is equal before the law and furthermore, it also points to the fact that we have an independent judiciary that will not hesitate to dispense justice without fear or favour."

At the same time Hani' widow Limpho described the apex court’s decision to release Walus as “diabolical”.

"The judgment was totally diabolical. I’ve never seen anything like this in directly they said once was correct to kill my husband.

"I don’t know why it’s called constitutional court; this is dictatorship at its highest and as long as we have the court led by (Chief Justice Raymond) Zondo we are done for as a country.

"Walus came to South Africa and killed my husband and this happens? This country is finished. The court did not even address the victims’ trauma and suffering."
