Abuse of no-confidence motions causing instability in metros - ANC

African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Thembi Nkadimeng says the ANC national executive committee is calling for an end to the abuse of the no-confidence motion in metros as it leads to instability.
Nkadimeng serves as Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in government.
She was speaking during a media briefing in Boksburg on Sunday about interventions at local government level.
She says the instability in metros is concerning as it leads to a lack of service delivery for citizens.
Nkadimeng said the NEC discussed in detail putting preventative measures in place to tackle this issue.
Some of the metros that have been largely affected by several motions of no confidence are Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay and Johannesburg.
Since the beginning of the year, Johannesburg has had three mayors.
“There are several key areas that the ANC is proposing with regards to a framework for coalitions and one of them is the threshold for motions of no confidence,” she said.
“We are proposing that motions of no confidence must be on the basis of the fundamentals of what council is defined to do.”
A national dialogue on coalition governments is set to take place on 27 July.
The dialogue, which will be led by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, will seek to establish stability within coalition governments in the absence of a legislative framework.
