Accused arrested in ‘takedown operation’, says witness in Meyiwa trial

Dramatic details emerged in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday on the events leading up to the arrest of accused number one Muzi Sibiya in 2020.

Senzo Meyiwa

A new witness, Constable Jabulani Buthelezi, told the Senzo Meyiwa trial that Sibiya was arrested in a dramatic “takedown” on 20 May 2020.

“When I approached them, we used what we call a tactical takedown. A tactical takedown uses a very authoritative voice that will make his mind confused.”

Buthelezi further told the court that Sibiya was arrested for the alleged illegal possession of ammunition.

He says the ammunition was found in his shack wrapped in plastic.

“Inside the plastic was another plastic attached to it. When I opened the plastic, I discovered an unused live bullet. There was also one magazine and one cleaning rod. It was 9mm rounds.”

Sibiya is one of five men on trial for the murder of the former Bafana Bafana captain in 2014.

He and his four co-accused have been charged with murder, attempted murder the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and aggravated assault.

The trial-within-a-trial looking into the admissibility of the alleged confessions by Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi will resume on Wednesday.
