Accused one soiled ‘himself” after alleged police assault

Meyiwa accused 'soiled himself' after alleged police assault

The High Court in Pretoria heard on Tuesday how accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial soiled himself after police allegedly beat him up on the day of his arrest.

Senzo Meyiwa

Muzi Sibiya, who is one of five men accused of killing the former Bafana Bafana captain, was arrested on 20 May 2020 in Tembisa.

His legal counsel, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, told the court that Sibiya was beaten to a pulp.

“After Lebathong, after he was assaulted, accused number one messed up on himself.”

Constable Jabulani Buthelezi, who is attached to the Ekurhuleni metro police, denied ever beating Sibiya.

According to his version of events, Sibiya requested a change of clothes on the day of his arrest.

Buthelezi said that Sibiya was wearing Brentwood pants together with flip-flops, and subsequently changed into a pair of jeans and Carvela shoes.

But Mngomezulu disputed this version, saying that the only reason why Sibiya had changed his clothes was because of the severe beating he received.

It has since emerged in court that no charges have been levelled against any of the police officers who have been accused of beating Sibiya and accused number two Bongani Ntanzi.

“Now counsel for accused one and two made allegations of assault against you. Has there been any criminal charges that have been brought against you?…….. Were there any complaints laid against you?”

“No, I have no knowledge of such a case,” responded Buthelezi.

A new witness is expected on the stand on Thursday.
