ACDP welcomes ivermectin settlement

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has welcomed the settlement reached by South African Health Products Regulatory Authority to allow the use of ivermectin to treat Covid-19 patients.

The High Court in Pretoria ruled on the matter on Tuesday.
There has been much controversy over the use of ivermectin since there is not enough data on its use on humans as it has been used as a veterinary drug.
The settlement allows for the ivermectin when compounded with other medicine.
ACDP were party to the court challenge.
"The use of ivermectin is very crucial in our view as we believe in the sanctity of human life and the well-being of the nation. Our high court challenge was part of the pursuit of avenues that could be effective in saving human life and alleviating human suffering during this prevailing pandemic," says the party’s Steve Swart.

"We are very pleased that there is now clarity around the section 21 program but more importantly around doctors and pharmacists that can compound the ivermectin substance with other medicines. We see this as a significant victory for freedom.
Swart said the ruling will lower the demand for the drug on the black market.
