Acting Public protector withdraws funds for Mkhwebane’s legal bids

Acting Public Protector, advocate Kholeka Gcaleka says the institution has withdrawn its participation from all litigations instituted by suspended Public Protector, Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

Mkhwebane was suspended from her role as the public protector by President Cyril Ramaphosa a month ago.
She has since approached court to challenge her suspension.
In a statement released on Thursday, the office says it will fund Mkhwebane’s challenge of her suspension, perjury trial defence, and legal representation at her impeachment inquiry.
The office however says it won’t pay for her appeal against dismissal of her urgent suspension and rescission challenge.
“The PPSA will not fund Adv. Mkhwebane’s appeal against the recent decision of the Western Cape High Court, where she sought to obtain an urgent interdict to prevent her suspension; the rescission application pending before the Constitutional Court; Part B of the application in the Western Cape High Court; and the defamation of character lawsuit, which is a private matter against the Democratic Alliance,” says the office in a statement.
