ActionSA proposes Nasiphi Moya as new Tshwane mayor

Nearly a week after former Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink was ousted, ActionSA says it wants deputy mayor Nasiphi Moya to run the metro.

Brink was voted out through an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence last Thursday.

Earlier this month,  ActionSA announced its decision to back the ANC after party leader Herman Mashaba accused the DA of arrogance.

He said the move to ditch the DA was to avoid being stabbed in the back by their former ally.

Reacting to Brink's removal, DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga accused Action SA of disrupting the progress and unity that the multiparty coalition had worked to build.

The DA has since called on the ANC's national leadership to intervene - in the spirit of the government of national unity, although there have been rumours that the ANC may field its own mayoral candidate.

Speaking on Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday, Mashaba didn't rule out backing an ANC mayor but said their preference is clear.

“They [the ANC] have got to put someone better than Dr Nasiphi. We’ll look at it. But what I am trying to say is that we know we are not clever, and some people have accepted my reason not to be clever.

But we are not fools. I am not going to engage in negotiations of such a sensitive nature in public.”

Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana is expected to convene another council sitting soon to elect a new mayor.
