Jace, 48, called in the alleged shooting around 8:30p.m., TMZ cited law enforcement sources as saying, and confessed that he was responsible.

But before he picked up the phone, police had already received reports from neighbors in the Hyde Park area of shots being fired inside the property.

According to TMZ, the hulking actor remained on the phone, as instructed by dispatchers, until LAPD arrived.

When officers entered the house they found April Jace, a mother-of-three, dead from gunshot wounds. Jace was taken into custody for questioning. He's not yet been booked in his wife's death.

Police confirmed that children were in the home at the time of the shooting. They have been placed in protective custody.

CBS reports that Jace is being questioned by detectives. A tragic photo shows the clearly distraught man talking to an officer, drenched in the red glow from a nearby police car or ambulance.

According to the Los Angeles Times police detectives with the 77th division are determining whether the shooting was an accident or a homicide.

Officer Sara Faden told the newspaper: 'It looks to have started as a domestic-related incident.'

The death sparked a huge investigation with police officers and news crews flooding the area.
