Additional power supply agreement signed by Joburg Mayor at Kelvin Power Station

Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Moerane says the additional 100 MW
of electricity signed will impact residents north-east of the city.
This follows the mayor joined by Premier David Makhura at the Kelvin Power station to sign a Power Purchase Agreement that will see an additional power supply of 100MW from 80MW to Joburg households and businesses.
“We have increased the capacity that we are getting from Kelvin we used to get 80MW it’s now increased by 100MW, which means we now get 180MW.”
Moerane says that the power supply is directed to the north-eastern parts of Johannesburg.
“I want to specify that the Kelvin Power station supplies our Sebenza substation which directs power to the northeastern parts of Johannesburg, like Houghton, Alexandra, Melrose, Bramley.”
He adds that once the plans to take over Soweto’s power supply occur, there will be a hybrid system in place for energy usage.
“With regards to the take over of electricity, it mainly because the people of Soweto were battling to get electricity from Eskom, there are residents who have been without power for 2 years and as a city we believe it is wrong.
“We have signed a memorandum of understanding, that guides the take over process so we are confident when the take over time comes, we will have a mixed breed of energy use.”
