Advocate nabbed for ‘offering to make rape case go away’
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
A 49-year-old former prosecutor, Advocate Matthews Ngwenya, appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
Ngwenya allegedly approached a suspect charged with rape, promising him that the charges would be dropped in exchange for R10 000.
Spokesperson for the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Simphiwe Mhlongo, says the man was eventually sentenced to life in prison, but after the sentence was handed down, he informed authorities about the attempted bribery.

"A case of corruption was reported and transferred to the Hawks for investigation, which resulted in his arrest, " says Mhlongo.
Ngwenya is set to appear in court again in July.
