African Union calls for ceasefire in Ukraine

The African Union (AU) has urged Russia and Ukraine to immediately lay down their arms and re-open political negotiations.
The AU Chair and President of Senegal Macky Sall and the AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat released a statement on Thursday evening following the first day of the Russian military invasion into Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also vowed retaliation against anyone who interfered and called on the Ukraine military to lay down its arms.
The United States has since imposed a second round of strict sanctions that intend to cripple Russia’s financial and technology sectors.
In a statement, the AU says it is a very serious and dangerous situation that is currently unfolding in the east of Europe.
“They call on the Russian Federation and any other regional or international actor to imperatively respect international law, the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Ukraine.
“The Chair of the African Union and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission urge the two parties to establish an immediate ceasefire and to open political negotiations without delay, under the auspices of the United Nations, in order to preserve the world from the consequences of planetary conflict, and in the interests of peace and stability in international relations in service of all the peoples of the world,” reads the statement.
