AfriForum calls for curfew to be lifted
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Lobby group AfriForum says its lawyers have written to the Minister of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma seeking answers on the reasoning behind the continued lockdown.
The country has been in a national state of disaster and lockdown since March 2020 and according to the current adjusted lockdown level 1, the curfew is from midnight till 4 am.
However, AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk says they regard this continued extension of the curfew as irrational and unjustified.
Broodryk says the minister should provide supporting documents, expert reports, evidence and data which supports the decision to enact curfews.
The minister was given until close of business on 19 November to respond.
“The continued forcing of curfews upon the population is unacceptable and not grounded in fact-based evidence. Therefore, AfriForum has stepped in to put a stop to this irrational policy. Should AfriForum not receive a response by the above-mentioned date it will be compelled to approach the High Court for relief, pending the Department and Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs providing the above requested data, supporting evidence and reasons,” says Broodryk.
