AfriForum embarks on campaign to stop ANC's hate speech bill
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Afriforum believes the ANC's proposed Prevention and Combatting of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill will not only violate freedom of speech, but also destroy democracy, togetherness, the free flow of ideas and media freedom.
AfriForum's media law expect, Advocate Mark Oppenheimer, says the Bill will also have a negative effect on the fight against racism and lead to arbitrary prosecution.
Afriforum finalised their comments in response to the Bill today, as part of their submission to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
South Africans have until business today to comment on the Bill.
The Bill aims to tackle hate speech and hate crimes following a spate of racist incidents in the country.
Meanwhile, cartoonist Jeremy Nell, better known as Jerm, has also presented a submission about the Bill. Nell says the Bill is an absurd proposal to silence freedom of speech and erodes the principles of democracy.
