AfriForum to probe Senzo Meyiwa murder

Lobby group AfriForum will investigate the circumstances leading to the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa's family turned to AfriForum to assist in the matter, saying the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had dragged its feet for the past five years.

On the anniversary of Meyiwa's death last month, his family expressed frustration at the lack of prosecution by authorities.

The goalkeeper was gunned down in Volsoorus in 2012, east of Johannesburg, in what appeared to be a botched robbery.

"We believe that Senzo and the Meyiwa family deserve justice, the family deserves to find closure," says CEO Kallie Kriel.

"AfriForum serves as a counterweight to the failure of the state and, as a civil rights watchdog, it is our duty to prevent the criminal justice system from collapsing."

The lobby group has assigned Advocate Gerrie Nel, who heads up its private investigation unit, to represent the family in the murder investigation.

Kriel confirmed that the team, led by Nel, will listen to recordings the family had with a number of people linked to the goalkeeper at the time of his death.

"We're firstly going to listen to recordings of interaction that the family had with the various role players, where various things were said to them that we believe can be used to try and solve this case.

"We cannot promise that we will be able to solve this but the promise we can give is that we will do our best to see that justice is done."
