MARIKANA COMMEMORATION - South Africa is turning its eyes to the mining sector this weekend, with the 3rd commemoration of the Marikana massacre that will take place on Sunday. 


An inter-prayer service is underway at the Lonmin mine in the North West to remember the 44 people who died during the month of August 2012. 


Amcu will hold a commemoration service at the koppie in Marikana on Sunday exactly three years since 34 mine workers were shot and killed in that area. 


Meanwhile, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa today met with the National Economic Development and Labour Council to discuss the impact of violent strikes on the economy...


 

 


MINING AND THE ECONOMY - Layoffs and retrenchments are also looming in the industry. The Rand pushed to a 14-year low against the Dollar today, and was at its weakest ever against the Pound. 


The threat of wage strikes in the gold sector is a concern to investors with Efficient Group economist Francois Stoffberg saying foreign investors are questioning the political leadership and their stance on labour negotiations...



 


PREMIER HOLDS EDUCATION IMBIZO - Gauteng Premier David Makhura along with Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi are hosting an education imbizo at Roodepoort Primary School. 


The school has been marred by violent protests which recently saw learners and teachers stay away after the appointment of the principal and her deputies. 


The Premier is hoping the engagement will lead to a lasting solution to the stand-off that has been going on for months.
