PHIYEGA INQUIRY - National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega will have some tough questions to answer on her conduct during the Marikana massacre in August 2012. 


President Jacob Zuma today established a board of Inquiry into the allegations of misconduct by Phiyega. 


The South African Police Union's Mpho Kwinika has called on President Zuma to replace Phiyega with a competent acting national police commissioner...

The EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says Phiyega should not be the only one...

She has until Monday to give feedback on why she should not be suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.



MIDVAAL MERGER - The High Court in Pretoria set aside the decision of the Municipal Demarcation Board to amalgamate the Midvaal Local Municipality with the Emfuleni Local Municipality into a metropolitan. 


Midvaal is the only municipality in Gauteng that is run by the DA and they took the Demarcation Board's decision to court, saying that the merger would have an impact on service delivery in Midvaal. 

DRUG BUST - Customs officials have confiscated crystal meth worth R29 million at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg today in two seperate drug busts. 


Crystal meth worth over R18 million was found  in three bags that arrived from Lagos in Nigeria. 


Customs officials at the cargo section also completed an inspection on several shipments declared as hair pieces from Lagos. Altogether 35,4kg of crystal meth, valued at R10,6 million, was confiscated in the second bust.



OSCAR PISTORIUS APPEAL - The State's appeal against former paralympian Oscar Pistorius's culpable homicide conviction will be heard by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on 3 November. 


A panel of five judges will hear the appeal.
