RIAH PHIYEGA - On the eve of the release of the national crime statistics in parliament, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega is expected to submit reasons to President Jacob Zuma why she should not be suspended over allegations of misconduct. 


This follows a finding by the Farlam Commission that top police management lied about the events leading up to the Marikana massacre where 34 mine workers were killed during protest action three years ago.

ACTRESS ARRESTED FOR METH - Social media was abuzz today following the confirmation that a local soapie star was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport over the weekend, allegedly with 15,4kg of crystal meth in her luggage. 


The 29-year old was on a flight from Abu Dhabi. 


Sars spokesperson Luther Lebelo says the actress is expected to appear in court tomorrow, which is when her identity will be revealed...

CORRUPTION MARCH - Metalworkers union Numsa says there are elements within Nedlac and Cosatu trying to sabotage the union and organisers of an anti-corruption march. 


The organisers have meanwhile declared that the scheduled marches in Cape Town and Pretoria for Wednesday will go ahead, despite a two week notice by Nedlac. 


Numsa, on behalf of all unions, says they applied for permission well in advance. The permission was granted on 25 September with the strike action allowed after 14 days.

UN GENERAL DEBATE - US President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations's General Assembly in New York talking about issues such as international unity and the war on terrorism. 


Obama told the assembly that if world powers can't work together more affectively, they will all suffer the consequences...
