Ageing infrastructure to blame for Joburg blackouts

Ageing infrastructure is mostly to blame for the ongoing power outrages in Johannesburg, says the city’s MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager.

De Jager says another reason for the blackouts experienced in several parts of the city this week is the switchover to a new substation, Sebenza

The switchover did not go as smoothly as the city would have wanted, but De Jager says the issues have since been resolved.

Johannesburg experienced at least three separate unplanned power outages on Monday, as a cold front moved into the city.

De Jager says the aging power infrastructure network is posing a significant challenge to the city .

"Just on City Power alone, we are talking about R19 billion backlog on infrastructure."

De Jager says over the next three years, the focus of City Power’s capital investment strategy will be to refurbish and expand the network.
