The police’s district commissioner in Johannesburg Max Masha met with protesting Soweto residents on Tuesday.

The residents of Meadowlands, Killarney and surrounding areas took to the streets on Tuesday, blocking roads in protest over a number issues, including crime.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Mathapelo Peters, says Masha managed to reach an agreement with the protestors.
"We have managed to talk to the community, we've made some commitments as the police. The situation is quiet, it’s calm. The community promised they will give us some time because we noted this and that is why at the level of province we've decided to intervene and just come and check what is going on because some of the complaints were actually against the police."

Peters says telephone numbers were given to community members to allow them to call the police should they have any grievances.
"They will work closely with the police. We've given them phone numbers that they can call should they not be happy with cases that they've reported or in the event they witness crime happening."
Peters says the protest has been suspended and the roads are being cleared.
"We still clearing the roads up as we speak. The meeting has just been concluded. So they promised they will clear the roads.
"For now it’s over the situation is calm although there are still groupings on the streets, some are leaving, I guess doing to their homes."
