The Kathrada Foundation says member of the public are welcome to attend the funeral.

"Questions have been raised by both members of the media and others on whether women can attend, as traditionally at Muslim funerals, men usually conduct the cemetery rites. Please note that the cemetery programme in its entirety is open to both men and women," the foundation confirmed.

Who will be speaking and how will proceedings occur:

The programme will include a political tribute session organised by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation with the Former President of South Africa and Board member of the Kathrada Foundation, Kgalema Motlanthe that will speak at the event.

The programme will be chaired by Derek Hanekom, Chairperson of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and will be followed by the ritual Muslim funeral prayer rites, which will commence at 11.30am at the cemetery.

The Muslim funeral rites, also called the Janaza prayer, will see mourners standing in rows with the bier positioned in front. It will be led by an Imam.
