Ahmed Kathrada in a stable condition in hospital

The
Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada is in a stable
condition, after he underwent surgery at a Johannesburg hospital.

Kathrada (87) was initially admitted to hospital for dehydration. Doctors then picked up a blood clot on his brain.
Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton, says the blood clot was successfully removed.
"It will be some time before Kathrada fully recovers. Due to hospital regulations and the period required for recovery, only visits from the immediate family will be permitted," said Balton.
Balton also thanked the public and Kathrada's friends and family for their well-wishes and support.
"We hope that you continue to remember Kathrada in your prayers and take time to reflect on the ideals and values that he and his generation have stood for," added Balton.
Kathrada is one of three Rivonia Trialists still alive, with the other two being Andrew Mlangeni and Denis Goldberg.
Along with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba and Elias Motsoaledi, they were sentenced in 1964 to life imprisonment on Robben Island during the famous Rivonia Trial.
