Timol died in 1971 after falling from the 10th floor of the John Vorster Square police station.

The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Torie Pretorius delivered his closing arguments in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

He has urged the court to reject the testimony of former apartheid-era cop Jan Rodrigues, who testified that Timol committed suicide.

"My lord, we must follow doctor Naidoo's recommendation that the death was caused by massive head (brain) and chest injury. Vital centre damage and compromised respiration. Obviously the finding regarding to suicide you should reject that and scrap that my lord."

Pretorius says Rodrigues played a big role in Timol's death.

"He was in police custody and the police where responsible for his well-being. He died at the hands of the security police and their act or omission constitutes murder. Rodrigues perpetuated the cover-up. There is no way that he did not see the injuries," says Pretorius.

He told the court Timol was meant to be held inside the cells where there were checks and balances. Instead they chose to hold him in the offices to cover up the assault and torture.
