Wednesday started with breaking news of a shooting at the Cape Town International Airport.

Two people were wounded, including an alleged Cape gang boss.

Later on Wednesday, a man was robbed of foreign currency at the Wonderboom National Airport in Pretoria.

It's been reported that $1million was taken, however police are unable to confirm this amount.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says the victim had come to the airport to collect a package containing foreign currency when he was robbed.

The usually outspoken police minister Fikile Mbalula has been mum on social media since the news broke.

It comes two days after Mbalula issued a statement saying he believes the "days of being terrorised by criminals at the airport are nearing its end".

His comments come after six suspects were arrested at the weekend following a tip-off from a security vehicle following a car from the airport.

However, Mbalula has issued a statement following the airport shooting.

His spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says the minister is investigating the possibility of implementing similar stringent security measures at the Cape Town International Airport as has been implemented at OR Tambo International Airport.

"The airport in Cape Town is a national key point so the security must be upped because as people come in our country, we must make sure our visitors are safe and secured."
