Alex fire donations ‘disappeared without a trace’

The Department of Human
Settlements in Gauteng has requested the
public to stop sending donations to the victims of
the recent fire in Alexandra.
The department says it has received more than enough donations.
The department's spokesperson Keith Khoza says almost all the victims have now been assisted through the donations by members of the public.
"We believe that the support that we have received from the public has assisted a great deal and that we have reached almost all the victims of the fire through the help that has been given from government, NGO's and churches and individuals that have come forward.”

Khoza says unfortunately some of the contributions - mainly building materials - have been stolen.
"They have disappeared without any trace, which points to people who are unscrupulous, who are robbing the victims of the help that they have needed."
He says investigations are underway to find the people who have been stealing from the community.
Khoza says the department is still engaging with the community to establish what other things they may still need.
"We will make an assessment of what exactly do they need and respond to their specific needs.”
