This was decided during a community meeting, held at the San Kopano community centre on Friday morning.

The meeting was organised by the the Alex Shutdown movement, for community members to address their grievances to City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba did not attend the meeting.

In a statement answering Presidents Cyril Ramphosa's call for him to address the community members, Mashaba said: "Name the time and place Mr President, I will be there, I wonder if you will be."

At the community meeting, various speakers raised their concerns and vowed to continue with the protests until Mashaba addresses them.

The residents are protesting against the construction of illegal structures in the area and poor service delivery.

"Mashaba doesn't take the people of Alexandra serious, Mashaba undermines black people and poor people," said one of the speakers.

The common request from the residents is to protest to Sandton, known as the heart of South Africa's economic hub.

Organisers of the movement resolved that the protest should take place on Monday, to have a more significant impact on the economy.

"What we have to do now is to mobilise more people, we should also agree with taxi associations and business people," said Sandile Muvundla.
