Alexandra residents up in arms over power outages
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Law enforcement authorities were deployed to Alexandra on Monday morning to quell a community protest.
The protest led to the closure of the Marlboro Drive and Pretoria Main Road.
It is believed the residents are protesting over power outages in the area.
Last month, Alex residents were amso up in arm over an apparent lack of service delivery.
Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla has urged motorists to use alternative routes.
“The intersection of Marlboro Drive and Pretoria main road in Marlboro is currently barricaded off to traffic. Then there are also closures on Viola Road and this is due to protest action by residents of Alexander, who are allegedly protesting over power outages in the area. The situation is tense and officers have been deployed.
“These closures are causing heavy disruptions as traffic is being diverted away from the closures and this is also affecting traffic going in and out of the Marlboro Driving License Testing Centre. Expect heavy delays along the Marlboro Drive on the M1 South heading towards the Marlboro Drive and the Grayston Drive exit and on Andre Street in Wineburg and Grayston Drive in Sandton heading towards the M1."
