Alexandra residents vow to move protest to Sandton

Organisers of the #AlexShutdown say their protests will be moved to the country’s economic hub, Sandton on Thursday.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s failure to address protesting residents resulted in the organisers of the #AlexShutdown intensifying their demonstration.
“It doesn’t make any sense if we are in our territory in Alexandra. We want to there picket at the gate of the municipality,” says organiser Sandile Mavundla.
The community, north of Johannesburg, was brought to a standstill on Wednesday after hundreds of residents took to the streets.
They were protesting over service delivery and people illegally occupying land.
“We are willing to show the mayor where we have illegal informal settlements, we are willing to show the mayor where we have a problem of sewer problems and show him where are parks aren’t maintained.”
MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun wanted to address the crowds but they refused.
