Allandale substation fire leads to power outages
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
An electricity substation in Allandale went up in flames on Wednesday after one of its transformers caught fire.
The substation houses both Eskom and City Power infrastructure.
City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena says there is currently a total shutdown of the substation to allow the emergency services to put out the fire. This has resulted in power outages affecting several areas in Midrand.
"The affected areas are Rabie Ridge 1, 2, 4 and 5, Mayibuye, Commercial Ext 9, Austine View, and parts of Glen Austin," according to Mangena.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire started at an Eskom transformer.
"Both City Power and Eskom technicians are on site to determine the cause of the fire and investigations are being conducted," said Mangena.
He adds that the full extent of the damage caused by the fire is still unknown.
A fire at an #Allandalesubstation has left several areas around Midrand without power.
