A man accused of killing a KwaZulu-Natal tuckshop owner and her five children told the Durban High Court on Tuesday he was "stressed".

"He does not look well. What is the matter with him?" Judge Nompumelelo Radebe asked as Tshepang Mokhali, 25, stood in the dock.

"He says he's stressed," the Sotho interpreter replied after speaking to Mokhali.

Radebe ordered that Mokhali see a doctor at Westville prison.

The case was adjourned to October 6 for Radebe to receive a medical report and for Mokhali's Legal Aid advocate Thiagaraj Pillay to consult him.

He allegedly shot dead his relatives Maselina Leneah, 38, and her five children, aged between three and 14, in the Mzinyathi area of Inanda, near Durban, in December 2012.

He allegedly fled to Lesotho and was arrested after he visited a relative in Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape, on January 17.

"It is alleged that he robbed the family, who are his relatives, and killed them to cover up the robbery," Colonel Jay Naicker said at the time.
