Almost half a million people visited Durban’s beaches over Christmas, the eThekwini Metro Municipality announced on Monday.

Municipal spokeswoman Tozi Mthethwa said that the municipality’s Festive Season Management Committee reported that from Thursday to Sunday 483,923 people visited the municipality’s beaches.
Lifeguards had to rescue 66 people and 2,936 people received medical treatment, mostly for stings from blue bottles (also known as Portuguese man-o’-war) and cuts and abrasions.
She said there was one fatal stabbing incident reported on Mahatma Ghandi Road (formerly Point Road) which was being investigated by police.
There were 18,338 identification arm bands given to children, of which 109 were separated from their families. All but one was reunited with their families.
She urged those going to the beaches to only swim in designated swimming areas and to heed the instructions of life guards.
