Ambulance driver and owner arrested

A driver and the owner of a privately owned ambulance company are expected to appear in court on Monday on charges of reckless driving and fraud.

This comes after the ambulance was stopped by the National Traffic Police for allegedly driving recklessly on the R562 in Olifantsfontein, north of Johannesburg.
Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says it was also discovered that the driver did not have a professional driving permit.
"The driver attracted the attention of traffic officers when the ambulance was observed cutting in front of traffic dangerously. The driver failed to stop when instructed to and other traffic officers had to be called before he was eventually handcuffed."
Police then later arrested the owner of the ambulance when he arrived at the police station to check on his driver.
Zwane says the owner will be charged with fraud because the operator’s permit displayed on the vehicle was deemed invalid.
The driver is expected to be charged with reckless and negligent driving, inconsiderate driving, driving without a professional driving permit and failing to obey the instruction of a traffic officer.
