Amcu: Mining companies use ‘clever tricks to loot money and show less profit’
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has labelled the planned job cuts at Sibanye-Stillwater as unjustified and a blatant display of theft.
This follows an announcement that the mining company - formerly known as Lonmin - plans to cut over 5000 jobs due to restructuring at its Marikana mine in the North West.
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa addressed the media in Rosebank on Tuesday where he emphasised the union’s role in protecting workers.
“As Amcu we came to this space in the mining and in the workplace to give workers life and no one can dispute that.
“But the thief’s only intention is to steal, kill and destroy. No one can say we are not experiencing this in our lifetimes.”
In a statement, rival mining union the National Union of Mineworkers claimed the company made a net profit of R68 billion year-on-year from 2017 to 2018.
