Amcu thrown a lifeline after deregistration decision
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Labour relations registrar Lehlohonolo Molefe has decided not to continue with the deregistration of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
The 300 000-member strong mineworkers union will keep its doors open after Molefe decided not to suspend Amcu’s registration.
In a statement, Molefe says written representations from the union's leadership convinced him to stop the process.
The biggest union in the platinum industry, was lashed for not having an elective conference.
He says following several consultations AMCU acceded to hold its long-awaited national congress in September.
Previously, the union’s president Joseph Mathunjwa described Molefe’s intention to shutdown Amcu as a political attack.
Mathunjwa accused the state of colluding with business to attack the union due to its militant stance.
